Silver Medallist At Rio Olympics Sells His Medal To Save A 3-Year-Old Boy Who’s Battling Cancer

Olympic Medal is a dream for each and every athlete in the world. For an athlete, his/her life could be changed after winning an Olympic medal. Sometimes small gestures go a long way, sometimes they even save a life.

Piotr Malachowski wins Silver Medal at Rio Olympics

Polish discus thrower Piotr Malachowski had won a silver medal at Rio Olympics. Rather than celebrating the moment, he was unhappy that he had to sell the medal for money to save a 3-year-old Olek, who has been battling eye cancer since two years and the treatment in New York was his only hope.

Piotr had pledged to win a medal for little Olek at Rio 2016 and he did it. Though his eye was on the gold medal so that he could fetch more money for Olek’s surgery, he ended up winning silver which, thankfully, proved enough.

Thus, he said that he auctioned off his medal this week to fund treatment for a three-year-old boy. The 33-year-old Silver medallist wrote on his Facebook page that:

I fought for gold in Rio. Today I’m calling on everyone to fight for something even more precious. If you help me, my silver medal may turn out to be more precious than gold for Olek.”

He added that he would use the entire sum raised to pay for treatment. Later, Piotr Malachowski wrote “Success,” saying that the medal had found takers. Dominika and Sebastian Kulczyk, a couple paid enough for it to complete the fundraising.

Hence, we should encourage such athletes and world needs people like Piotr whose gesture has become an inspiration to many people around the world. Piotr, you are a true champion.
