Bajirao And Mastani 300 Years Old Love Story

Bajirao Mastani, the story of the Maratha warrior Peshwa (Prime Minister) Bajirao I of the Maratha Empire and his second wife Mastani. It is the most interesting love story in the history of Maharashtra. He at the age of 20 taken over as the Peshwa of his kingdom and fought 41 battles for next 20 years.

How Bajirao and Mastani Met?

Bajirao raised a Brahmin (the priestly class), and so was expected to perform priestly duties when he grew up. But recognizing his abilities early, fourth Maratha emperor Shahu Maharaj made him Peshwa after the death of his father. He was just 20 years old at the time. He did not lose any battles and expanded the Maratha empire into the north and strengthened its hold over its territories.

Mastani was born to Maharaja Chhatrasal. According to legend, she was the adopted daughter of Chhatrasal. She born in Mau Sahaniya situated 15 km from district Chhatarpur of Madhya Pradesh. There is a Mastani Mahal in Dhubela where Mastani lived and danced.

In December 1728, Maharaja Chhatrasal worried as Mohammad Khan Bangash was planning an attack on Bundelkhand. He then decided to write a letter to Bajirao asking for the help in the battle. Bajiro, as soon as after receiving the letter he left with hs army to help him. In this Bangash lost the battle and was arrested by Chhatrasal. Later he was set free on a condition that he would never ever attack Bundelkhand.

Chhatrasal called Baajirao has his 3rd son as he helped and was very much thankful for the help. Moreover, he divided the kingdom into three parts and gave the third part to Bajirao. The third part included – Jhansi, Kalpi, Siroz, Sagar and Hirdenagar. He also proposed a marriage between his daughter Mastani and Bajirao.

Bajiro Mastani Marriage:

Bajirao was already married and he took Mastani as the second wife. Matsani is not only beautiful but also had many talents like in horse riding, sword fighting, war affairs, religious studies, poetry, music and dance which attracted Bajirao. She bore him a third son, who was named Krishnarao at birth.

The Local Brahmin politicians took this an advantage and refused to accept the boy as a pure Hindu Brahmin since his mother was a Muslim. They refused to accept the marriage. This marriage with Mastani caused a rift in the orthodox Hindu Pune society of the time and led to a major crisis within the Peshwa family.

The first wife of Bajirao became the queen of Maratha Emire after her marriage. She also accepted the second marriage of Bajirao. She as highly devoted to her husband. Kashibai and Mastani delivered the baby boys a few months apart, the former’s son died at a very young age.

When Kashibai lost her child Mastani became more powerful in the kingdom which make her angry. She was was jealous of seeing Mastan’s young able boy. She even plotted several ways to kill Mastani along with her in-laws who didn’t like Bajirao’s second wife as well.

Death of Bajiro and Mastani:

Later, On April 28, 1740, Bajirao fell very ill and died. After his death, Mastani practiced the ritual of Sati and killed herself on his grave.

This story is taken as a film in which  Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone played the lead roles and it is going to hit the theaters on 18th December 2015. Sanjay Leela Bhansali Produced and directed the film.
