Amazon Plans To Set Up Global Delivery Centre In Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Global e-commerce giant Amazon has decided to set up its second largest global delivery center in India’s IT hub Hyderabad, which is likely to attract a large portion of its proposed investments of $2 billion (nearly Rs 13,446.5 crore) into India.

Amazon has said it will build a 2.9-million sq. ft. centre in Hyderabad for its biggest facility outside of its corporate headquarters in Seattle, which is expected to come up on 10 acres at Gachibowli. It will house 13,500 employees and be ready by 2018. The current headcount at Amazon development centre at Hyderabad is around 1,000 across multiple offices.

The move comes a year after the Seattle-based online market firm’s decision to build one of its largest Indian fulfillment centre (warehouse) over an area of 2, 80, 000 sq ft near Hyderabad.

The development also comes close on the heels of Apple choosing Hyderabad to set up its largest technology development centre outside the US and Google announcing to set up a huge campus in the city.

Indicating a keen interest in the Indian market, Amazon currently has a 30,000 square feet area of office space rented out in Mumbai and a 1.2-million square feet office space leased out in Bengaluru. It is expected that global delivery centre’s foundation stone will be laid on March 30 which is likely to witness attendance of its senior vice president David Zapolksy and vice president John Morgan.

“The land for the facility at Hyderabad is currently under a long-lease with the government of Telangana,” Jayesh Ranjan, Telangana’s IT secretary said.
