Bill Gates Once Again Tops The List Of World’s Richest Person In The World

Forbes Magazine on Tuesday (March 1) announced its annual list of the world’s richest persons. Microsoft’s co-founder Bill Gates continued his reign as the world’s richest person with a net worth of $ 75 billion. The 60-year-old Gates has been number one for 3 years in a row and topped the list for the 17th time in the last 21 years — and that after losing $4.2 billion of his wealth in the last 12 months.

Occupying the second spot on the list is Spanish retail giant Amancio Ortega (69), with a net worth of $67 billion. Ortega is best known for his fashion chain Zara. The billionaire philanthropist and Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett remained in the third spot, despite the fact that his net worth dropped by $11.9 billion to $60.8 billion.

Mexican telecom giant Carlos Slim dropped two spots to number four, after his wealth decreased by $27 billion, to $50 billion compared to 2015. Amazon.com founder and CEO Jeff Bezos moved up ten spots to number five, his net worth now estimated at $45.2 billion.

The biggest gainer on the 2016 list was Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, who jumped from No. 16 to No. 6 after adding another $11.2 billion to his vast wealth ($44.6 billion).

The newest and youngest billionaire is a 19-year-old Norwegian heiress, Alexandra Andresen.

The Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani has retained his position as India’s richest person despite shares of his oil and gas giant Reliance Industries taking a hit due to lower oil prices. He is ranked 36th on the list with a net worth of $20.6 billion.

With Ambani leading a pack of 84 billionaires from India, pharma magnate Dilip Shanghvi ($16.7 billion networth) ranked at 44, Wipro Chairman Azim Premji ($15 billion networth) ranked at 55 and HCL co-founder Shiv Nadar ($11.1 billion networth) ranked at 88 among the top 100 billionaires. Other prominent Indian billionaires include ArcelorMittal Chairman Lakshmi Mittal (135), Bharti Airtel’s Sunil Mittal (219), ports and power magnate Gautam Adani (453), matriarch Savitri Jindal (453), Bajaj Group’s Rahul Bajaj (722), Infosys chairman emeritus N R Narayana Murthy (959) and Mahindra Group’s chief Anand Mahindra (1577).

Forbes, in its 30th annual ranking of the rich, reported a total of 1,810 billionaires around the globe, down from the record total of 1,826 in 2014. The U.S. still boasts the most with 540 billionaires, followed by the 251 in China.

There were 221 people who dropped from the billionaire ranks in 2015. There were a total of 198 newcomers to the ranks, along with a number who had fallen from the ranks and worked their way back in.
