From Selfie Mania to Prabhas’ Baahubali pose inspires Ganesha idols this year

Lord Ganesha is worshipped in various forms and Ganesh idols come out in different avatars every year. Makers often prepare idols inspired by many things from different walks of life ranging from characters in super hit films to current issues and on-going trends in the society. Last year, we have seen the Ganesh idols ranging from Chota Bheem to Sai Baba. And if that isn’t enough, Ganesha’s vehicle, the mouse, also had a transformation of sorts, with some versions seeing him atop superhero, Spider-Man.

Ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi, which falls on September 17, 2015, let’s have a look at some Ganesh idols inspired by movies and current trends this year.

This year, ‘Baahubali’ fever gripped the country and many idols inspired by both Shivudu and Amarendra Baahubali characters are being made. Many lord Ganesha idol makers are said to have started creating idols similar to Prabhas’ pose, where he carries a ‘Shivling’ on his shoulder.

This year, the selfie bug has hit the people and the country’s obsession with selfies has gone a tad bit too far as idol makers have gone for idols of Lord Ganesh taking a selfie of him with his family members, Lord Shiva and Parvathi.

This is not the first time where we come across Ganesh idols of this type. Earlier, Pawan Kalyan’s super hit film ‘Gabbar Singh’ also inspired many idol makers to prepare idols inspired by the powerful cop. Rajamouli’s ‘Eega’ not only did wonders at the box-office but also inspired many to make idols inspired by the Super Fly. We have also seen World Cup Ganesha, Anna Hazare Ganesha and even the travel Ganesha.

Craftsmen who create Ganesha do not limit to only these movies and trends, the lord has been idolised in different forms of gods only to cater to the devotees tastes.

There has been an increasing awareness about eco-friendly practices in all walks of life. So far the Ganesha idols that are immersed in rivers, lakes and the sea are mostly made of Plaster of Paris which does not dissolve in water easily. This year, there were also eco-friendly Ganesh idols which made to this list. Digambar Manikar and his son Rajesh have made a 22-foot Ganesh idol weighing 150 kg using nothing but 30,000 tissue papers to show the importance of eco-friendly idols, according to Hindustan Times.
