PM Modi Promotes ‘Make in India’ campaign But Sardar Patel’s Statue Is Being ‘Made in China’

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s ‘The Statue of Unity’, the world’s tallest statue is being built by China’s Nanchang Province. This is considered as the work against the central government ‘Make In India’ campaign. The strong evidence for this can be found in the history. This is not only a statue, it is also a memorial. This 182-metre-tall memorial statue of Sardar Patel will be installed on Sadhu Bet near Sardar Sarovar dam.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, a month before he died, wrote a letter to Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru which is very confidential and marked it as ‘Highly Personal’. The matter in the letter is about warning Nehru of China. Sardar warns Nehru of Chinese military and intelligence appreciation and China’s “threat to India, both on the frontier and to internal security”.

Sardar stated in the letter that “even though as we (India) regard ourselves as friends of China, the Chinese do not regard us as their friends. With the communist mentality of “whoever is not with them being against them,” this is a significant pointer, of which we have to take due note.” Sardar has written speaking in the context of India being used by China as an ‘Assistant’.

“China continues to regard us with suspicion and the whole psychology is off, at least outwardly, skepticism.” The work of building the Statue of Unity has been given to L&T company and Jiangxi Toqine Metal Handicrafts Co Ltd.  India is said to be second after China in having more number of foundries and their workforce.

A member-secretary of the Sardar Vallabhai Patel Rashtriya Ekta Trust (SVPRET) told that they have not outsourced the construction of Sardar’s statue. He also said that as it the project was given an international importance, the company might have opted for a global supplier. Only bronze-plating will be done in China.
