The fate of the AIADMK chief’s appeal against Jayalalithaa and three others conviction and four years of jail and imposing a hefty fine of Rs 100 crore on her and Rs 10 crore each on three others by a special court in Bengaluru will be decided by the Karnataka High Court on Monday. The court had convicted Jayalalithaa in an 18-year-old disproportionate assets case known as DA case and sent her to jail in September last year that brought her down from the pedestal of chief minister ship and unseated her from the Assembly.

All are eagerly waiting to know the fate of one of India’s most charismatic and controversial leaders and if the High Court acquits her in the case or reduces the sentencing below two years, she can return as the chief minister of Tamil Nadu to lead the party in the Assembly election due in May 2016.

The Bengaluru City Police have made elaborate security arrangements in and around the Karnataka High Court premises to prevent any untoward incidents after the verdict. The City police have clamped prohibitory orders in one km radius from the high court area from 6 o’clock in the morning to 9 o’clock in the night apart from beefing up security.

Karnataka Advocate General BV Acharya, who has actually proved the charges against Jayalalithaa in the case has been reappointed as the Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) in the case after the Supreme Court ordered the removal of previous SPP Bhavani Singh came in his place in the trial court where he was allegedly favouring Jayalalithaa. Karnataka Police, Omprakash and Bengaluru Police Commissioner MN Reddi are personally maintaining the security arrangements. Tamil Nadu chief minister and Jayalalithaa’s most trusted man O Panneerselvam is also likely to be personally present at the Karnataka High Court when the judgement is delivered.

Jayalalithaa had been charged with accumulating Rs 66.65 crore wealth disproportionate to known sources of her income from 1991-96 in her first term as Chief Minister in the case that has seen many political and legal twists and turns.

The case was transferred to a special court in Karnataka by the Supreme Court to ensure an impartial trial after Jayalalithaa’s rivals alleged that she was managing the prosecution and influencing the judiciary in her Tamil Nadu state.
