Discriminatory Practices By Taxi Companies Force Cab Drivers To Strike

With their own taxis, the drivers who allow themselves to be a part of the aggregators like Ola and Uber type taxi hailing model are striking against the aggregators mainly in Mumbai from Monday.

They seem to be on just side as the resonance can be felt in other fellow drivers who are similarly placed in other cities of India. Many of them from other cities like Pune and Hyderabad are hinting to join their brethren.

The trade practice of these aggregators has forced the drivers to go on the street. As per the allegations, both the two aggregators are believed to charge a uniform and big amount of 26 percent for service charges from the drivers for there services through allowing customers to book their taxis through the apps. But the main problem lies in their injustice when it comes to booking as they give preference to those taxis for booking which are owned by aggregators themselves under financing schemes opposing to the taxis owned by the drivers or by others. Since the whole business runs on entirely by technology, so its quit easy for the companies to meddle with the software to gain their targets.

Ola and Uber are of the view that whatever their behaviour is all legitimate. The reason they might be thinking is that what is wrong in awarding those who give in return greater business opportunities. The answer to that question is if you wanted to ride piggyback on the taxi hailing business to push your loan program, you should either shut the doors for drivers who are not at all interested in your loan or charge them a lesser fee vis-à-vis the loan-seekers. Indeed the second option too could hit a major legal challenge because the loan seekers are already paying interest on loan and should not be subjected to a discriminatory heightened service fee at the time of providing taxi services.

Same was the case with Microsoft Corporation of the US with the European Commission. It use to insist on using its own software of internet browser as a precondition for anyone to use its other software. But it was struck down as completely blatant, discriminatory and anti-competition. And now its a universal fact that broadband service providers cannot at all discrimniate between household and business users as well as for data usage for high and low usage. Not the concept of Net Neutrality has nearly become universal norm.

The taxi aggregators certainly make more money if they give vehicles on loans for the drivers. And apart from them, the car manufacturers too get more production orders if they get large orders thanks to the advent of aggregators presence in the business of lending. But the one who really gets hurt are the hapless drivers because of the ongoing discriminatory practice. And the public who use these services too will get hurt when these taxis halt there service, who found this choice to be a transparent in billing as well as for the convenience of door-to-door travelling.
