Supreme Court Ready To Hear Centre’s SC/ST Law Review Plea After Deadly ‘BharatBandh’

Amid ongoing protests across the nation, yesterday, the Center filed a review petition seeking ‘dilution’ of SC/ST Judgement. In response to the petition, the Supreme Court on Tuesday said that it is ready to hear the plea for review, filed by the Centre.

The Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra along with the rest of the bench comprising of Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel and Justice Uday Umesh Lalit, ordered the listing of the matter to be heared at 2 pm.

The Lok Sabha too was disturbed due to the protests, with the Speaker of the House Sumitra Mahajan adjourning the House till noon within minutes of meeting.

As soon as the meeting in the Lok Sabha started, AIADMK members begin their protest near the Speaker’s podium with the demand to set up Cauvery Management Board.

Other members from the opposition were standing on their seats.

As the protests were out of control, speaker Mahajan ordered for an adjournment of the house.

At least nine persons were killed due to the Dalit protests along with dozens injured after the organizations called for a nation-wide-stir and it turned violent. The protests were against a Supreme Court order that dilutes a law with the aim of preventing atrocities against Dalits and Tribes.

The government tried a bit to control the agitated activists by saying that a petition had already been filed in the apex court calling for a review over its March 20 order that disallows automatic arrest and registration of any case for alleged harassment of Dalits and others. But the Supreme Court denied any urgent and priority based hearing of the matter.

Protesters were seen clashing with police personnel in states of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Bihar and Odisha. Normal life was paralyzed in all these states in different ways after reports of violence and arson spread.

The central government sent 800 anti-riot policemen to violence-hit Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

According to the Home Ministry official reports, atleast two companies of Rapid Action Force (RAF) were sent to Meerut and another two to Agra and Hapur in Uttar Pradesh.

The clashes proved to be deadly in Madhya Pradesh where at least six persons were reportedly killed and many of dozens injured which forced the authorities to impose curfew in areas of Morena, Gwalior and Bhind districts. Protests were also held the state’s capital Bhopal as agitators blocked roads in the state capital.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan made a very special passionate appeal for peace.

Police said at least two people were killed in Bhind and another one in Morena while three were killed in Gwalior. The dead in Morena was identified as Rahul Pathak, a student leader.
