Karti Chidambaram Sent To CBI Custody For 3 More Days In Corruption Case
The son of former Union Minister P Chidambaram got a small relief from Enforcement Directorate in the INX Media money laundering case. The Delhi High Court today said that he cannot be arrested till March 20, the next hearing of the case.
This is an interim relief for the 46-year-old businessman that comes a day after the apex court transferred the case to the Delhi High Court with his plea to cancel the summons issued by ED. The lawyers of Karti has argued that the Enforcement Directorate has no jurisdiction cannot have any sort of investigation not related to the allegations in the FIR lodged by the Central Bureau of Investigation or CBI. The FIR was lodged on May 15, 2017.
The lawyer of Karti Chidambaram, Salman Khurshid, who is also the former Minsiter, has said that they had asked both the apex court and the Delhi High Court to cancel the summons by the Enforcement Directorate as they have anticipated the “sequential arrests”.
“What we did in the Supreme Court was to anticipate sequential arrests, that when you get bail in one matter, then you are picked up in another matter… We wanted that to be clear… because the law doesn’t allow that to be done,” said Khurshid.
Karti Chidambaram has been in the custody of CBI since his arrest in the airport on February 28. Karti will be produced in the Delhi High Court since his 3-day CBI custody ends today, though CBI has sought his remand for six more days.
CBI arrested Karti on February 28 on charges that he had facilitated the investment approvals for the controversial INX Media Group back in 2008 and 2007, with the help of his father’s influence. His father, P Chidambaram was the Union Finance Minister back then. In return for this investment, Karti is alleged to have been paid 700,000 dollars by the two former owners of the media house, Indrani and Peter Mukerjea.
CBI arrested Karti Chidambaram while he was on his return from the United Kingdom at the Chennai airport.
