Sushma Swaraj vs Shashi Tharoor Over Making HINDI Official Language In United Nations
When it comes to listing out the most graceful and responsible minister the country ever had, the first name that strikes every Indian brain is undoubtedly External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. She is one such minister who wins hearts with her able deeds.
Right from the “Exasperating farrago of distortions”, he has always been the epitome of trolls and memes on social media. It might be his English or the logical things he perpetuates on the rivals, Shashi Tharoor is always a winner in this space of wisdom and fun. Tharoor has the power of transforming a normal discussion into an erudite one.
More than his work, the Kerala MP is popular on social media for his amazing speech videos and the use of fancy English words. Shashi Tharoor’s wordy tweets have, time and again, baffled, impressed and intrigued people on social media and generated some hilarious responses.
Imagine, if these two people come together for a debate, it would be a delight to their fans, isn’t it? External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Congress leader Shashi Tharoor had a deal of taking jibes in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday over making Hindi an official language at the United Nations.
Tharoor questioned the need to push it while Sushma called his remark ‘ignorant’. Sushma Swaraj, in her reply to a question, said: “It is often asked why Hindi is not an official language in the UN. Today, I will want to tell the House, the biggest problem is the procedure.”
However, it was not the only place when the minister had to respond to questions on language. A user on micro-blogging website Twitter had advised the minister to learn South Indian languages. “Sushma Ji and all those for Hindi…come learn the South Indians languages..they are beautiful,” the user tweeted.

Sushma Swaraj’s response left the users and others bewildered. The minister replied back and said, “I am proud of all Indian languages. I speak some of them fluently.” She also shared an old video of her speaking in Kannada, in a bid to prove her multi-lingual credentials.

The minister explained that as per the procedure, two-thirds of the 193 members of the organization — which comes to 129 — will have to vote in favor of making Hindi an official language and also share the financial expenditure that would be incurred in the process.
“The problem comes when apart from voting, the burden of the amount also falls on them. Economically weaker countries that support us shy away from this. We are working on it, we are making attempts to get the support of countries like Fiji, Mauritius, Surinam… where people of Indian origin are there.
“When we get that kind of support and they are also ready to bear the financial burden, it will become an official language,” she said.
When a member pointed out that making Hindi an official language will require an expenditure of Rs 40 crore every year, Sushma Swaraj said: “Not just Rs 40 crore, the government is ready to spend Rs 400 crore on it.”
She, however, added that spending money would not serve the purpose.
