While the people across the country went through massive cash crunch because the ATMs were running dry post demonetisation, this ATM in Rajasthan is now making a lot of people happy by surprising them with extra cash.

Jitesh Diwakar is a resident of Tonk in Rajasthan. He didn’t know what fate awaited him at an ATM when wanted to withdraw Rs 3,500. Diwakar was among several people who turned richer after a malfunctioning ATM rained cash on Tuesday evening at the Rajasthan town.

However, Mr. Diwakar was the only man who raised his voice against this malfunction, unlike others who chose to return home with more cash.

“I immediately called my father who arrived with my uncle and we informed the bank manager,” he said.

According to a report, a number of people who queued up to withdraw cash received a lot more than what they typed in. While most of them chose not to report the issue, Jitesh Diwakar approached Bank of Baroda and informed them about the issue. The report further stated that the ATM had dispensed Rs 6.76 lakh by the time it was shut adding that over 10 people had benefitted from the apparent glitch.

The bank officials decided to shut down the ATM branch after realizing that Rs 6.76 lakh was already dispensed. Around ten people got “excess” cash because the ATM was dispensing a Rs 2,000 note against a Rs 100 note.

Tonk Harishankar Meena, the Chief Manager of the bank’s collectorate circle, said: “Technically, Rs 2,000 notes cannot be loaded in the Rs 100 cassette as the sensors won’t accept it. That’s why we have called technical experts to investigate how this happened,”

“Out of all these people, only one person contacted and brought the matter to our notice. We have taken a back-up of the ATM (records) from which we will get information of the people who withdrew money in these two hours. After tracking them we will ask them to return the extra money,” said Mr. Meena.

Local shopkeepers told me that people coming to the ATM were suddenly leaving very happy… and smiling,” Meena concluded.

The bank will lodge a FIR against the people who returned with excess cash. The CCTV cameras will help the police to track the people.
