Humour is often used as a way to combat or diffuse stressful situations, and over the past three weeks, nothing has bothered the Indian common man more than the demonetisation move by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

After being totally shocked by the sudden announcement on November 8, a major cash crunch has followed in the country since people are either lining up outside of ATMs to withdraw cash or outside banks to get new currency notes, as some have switched to cashless transactions.

While online transactions and card payment saw a rise in the past few weeks, one individual decided to take things to a new level when He/she couldn’t find change to pay at a public toilet, as she wrote a cheque for Rs 5. Wait, what?

Surprisingly, what you have heard is right! What makes this one instance extremely amusing is the amount for which the cheque had been written out as well as the purpose.

The cheque written by a person in Madurai had ‘Public Toilet Madurai’ written on it, and was shared on Facebook by a user BRM Muralidharan, who mentioned it as a sign of country moving towards a cashless economy.

“Country moving towards ‘Cashless Economy.’ Payment made by cheque for Rs. 5 for using the Public Toilet in Madurai, TN. Goosebumps!!” Mr. Muralidharan wrote on Facebook.

It is not known how authentic this is, but it highlights a situation that is funny but points out the current sad reality. The country has been asked to go cashless but then desperate times call for desperate measures.
