Being a military person, each and every soldier dreams to own a tank someday and drive on it. But many won’t get the chance of driving or owning it. There are a lot of equipment’s used by the armies during the wars, but one that remains of significance is Army tanks. A tank is a powerful, armoured and highly mobile fighting vehicle which serves as a backbone for countries during wars.

There abandoned tanks can be seen outside defence camps, military areas, war memorials, and government residential spaces. But there is a symbolic meaning of war’s history in those tanks. Whenever we see an army tank, we see a barrel to it. The long pipe-like structure ahead of the tank is called a barrel.

We see some tanks with barrel up, some with the straight barrel and few tanks with the barrel down. Have you ever thought about the reason behind it?

If the barrel of the tank is kept up (high), it means that the tank has taken part in the war and won. When these tanks are decommissioned, they are placed outside defence establishments as a proud sign.

When the tank’s barrel is kept straight:

If the barrel of the tank is kept down, then it was used during peace time or it can be a replica or model.

When the tank’s barrel is kept lower:

If the barrel of the tank is kept down, then it was captured from enemy camp after defeating them during a war. These tanks are also painted with enemy flags upside down.
