New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has communicated a reminder to Interpol asking it to take forward an application that was sent to it in a bid to seek a red corner against Mehul Choksi regarding the alleged USD 2 billion PNB money laundering case, officials said on Monday.

Soon after the Enforcement Directorate filed a charge sheet against the fugitive in a Mumbai court, according to the officials, an arrest warrant request against Mehul Choksi was sent by the global police.

Under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the officials said that the Interpol subsequently sought for more information about the criminal case filed by it against Mehul Choksi. And it was replied to as per the demand, and now for the same application, a reminder has been sent through the national central bureau (NCB) of the Interpol in India which was entrusted with the CBI.

Currently, both the agencies ED and Central Bureau of Investigation are probing this case.

They said that both the requests of a global arrest warrant and an extradition request to Antigua will go on side by side to get him to India. Mehul Choksi has taken refuge in Antigua Island.

Once Interpol processes RCN against any fugitive, it directs 192 member countries to get the person arrested or detain him where ever he is found and then only after the extradition or deportation process can start.

The Interpol has already issued such kind of notices against Nirav Modi, his brother Neeshal and sister Purvi along with his executives Subhash Parab and Mihir R Bhansali.

The request for such an issuance of Interpol notice against Choksi will also be processed by an internal committee of the Interpol next month as there is a strong case registered from the Indian side.

The Interpol’s RCN against Choksi was put on hold after he made a representation saying that all the cases were against him due to a deep political conspiracy, they had said.

Apart from that, he also said that the jail conditions in India are not so good, along with the guarantee of personal safety and health issues, officials had said.

The officials said that the CBI had replied to those claims made by the fugitive billionaire in a very strong rebuttal, the officials said.

Mehul Choksi applied for the citizenship of Antigua and Barbuda last year itself along with taking an oath to the country on January 15 this year after undergoing the nationality process, officials had said.
