20.6 kg of Dubai Gold worth 6.8 Crores Seized
Four people have been arrested by the DRI (The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence), all four have been accused of smuggling gold that is worth Rs. 6.88 crores. The gold is said to be from Sri Lanka and Dubai.
Officials from the DRI said, 20.6 kg of gold has been seized, the gold has a total worth of Rs. 6.88 crores. The group kept the gold at a residential home in the in the city. In addition to that, a BMW car was used to smuggle the gold, they also seized Rs. 21 lakh along with it.
The DRI said: “Interrogation of the apprehended persons revealed that the Chennai-based kingpin, a resident of Choolaimedu, used to organise operatives who would work in the domestic sector to various airports, collect gold bars from transit passengers at the respective airports and carry them back to Chennai in the domestic sector and hand them over to the kingpin and his aides.”
The DRI said: “A part of the gold was also smuggled directly from Sri Lanka to India through the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu.”
The festival season is fast approaching and the demand for gold is slowly increasing, organized gang members are putting a lot of efforts to smuggle gold into India.
