An Ex-Ola Driver Reveals How He Exploited The System’s Loophole To Earn Lakhs With Fake Rides
We all know that Uber and Ola have modified their incentive models for drivers after finding a number of them manipulating the system and draining millions of rupees into their hands easily. But this latest revealed story makes it all tough once again.
Have you ever decided to take your earphones out and talk to your cab driver once? If yes, then you are in for a lot of interesting stories.
The same happened with Neha Garg, but, instead of just any random story, her driver revealed how he apparently ran a scam while employed with Ola.
In the journey, it all started because of a ‘nasty’ and ‘stubborn’ co-rider in her Uber Pool ride.
Well, we all hate when that happens. But, the driver was seriously pissed and wanted to cancel the ride.
Soon the driver started talking about a scam he used to run while employed with Ola.
Basically, drivers used a software that manipulated their location. So, when a customer booked a cab, all they would see is that the driver is at the pick up point. In reality, they would be somewhere else. Then, the drivers would put their registered mobile number in Flight Mode, to prevent the customer from contacting them.
The flight mode trick was for the actual, rare rides. Drivers then started using their own SIM cards to create fake Ola customers IDs. Apart from the driver, 4 people would sit in the cab and would repeatedly book the ride.
They kept following the same route but used a software to manipulate the location to avoid getting caught. They booked fake rides every day and earned up to Rs. 30,000 per day!
Eventually, Ola managed to track all the culprits and blacklisted 11,600 cabs.
ScoopWhoop contacted Ola and here’s what they said.
“We have zero tolerance to fraud on the Ola platform, both on the driver and customer side. While on one hand, we have instituted multiple checks and preventive technology interventions to eliminate any fraudulent activity on the platform since inception, we have also parallely partnered with local authorities to take stringent action against those attempting to do so wilfully, in the interest of overall security. We suspect that this is an attempt to malign our brand image amongst customers anddriver-partners.
To prevent any kind of malpractice on our platform, we maintain trust scores for every entity and ensure appropriate action whenever we observe a dip in this score. We have also incorporated stronger mobile identity verification, unique OTP check before starting the ride, automated allotment and institution of machine learning to detect suspicious behaviour and arrest any kind of attempt of malpractices on the Ola platform over the years.”
