New Delhi: Centre has moved the Supreme Court over the issue of Cauvery river water dispute by citing assembly elections in Karnataka which are scheduled to be held on May 12. The Centre made the request to issue three month’s timeline to implement top court’s order and also sought the clarification over the constitution of Cauvery Management Board.

In its petition, the Centre has already said that as of now the implementation of the Supreme Court’s order over Cauvery issue may bring unwanted situations of law and order and asked it to permit in delaying the order.

In Tamil Nadu, being a neighbouring state, the AIADMK has already announced a warning that it will hold a state-wide hunger strike on April 2, from 8 am to 5 pm, in an attempt to mount pressure on the Central government to set up the Cauvery Management Board.

The Tamil Nadu government has file a petition moving the Supreme Court with the intention of seeking contempt action by the top court against the Centre over its disobedience to the verdict on the Cauvery waters sharing. In the petition, the government of Tamil Nadu has said that the Centre did not obey the Apex court order by not following the order to constitute the Cauvery Management Board and delayed it further by convening a meeting of the concerned states. On Monday, the state government will make a request to the Chief Justice of India, for an early hearing of its contempt petition.

The government of Tamil Nadu has pointed out that the six-week deadline issued by the Suupreme Court of India to make arrangement in setting up of the Cauvery Management Board has already ended and the farmers of the state are waiting for an answer from the Central Government over the Cauvery issue. “We will reflect the feelings of all the people of Tamil Nadu and our farmers through our hunger strike which will be held from 9 am to 5 pm,” said O Panneerselvam.

The apex court had raised the 270 tmcft share of Karnataka by 14.75 tmcft and reduced Tamil Nadu’s share in an earlier judgement over the petitions filed by Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to give the final order of the Cauvery water disputes tribunal apportioning the water among the two states.

The court had already compensated Tamil Nadu by allowing taking of 10 tmcft ground water from the Cauvery river basin. Since the time of the verdict, Tamil Nadu has always been urging the Central government to set up the Cauvery Management Board to ensure that it can receive its due share of water from the inter-state river.

The government at the Centre is expected to take an urgent move to decide over the issue.
