Chandra Grahan (Lunar Eclipse) 2018: Visibility In India, Timing And Significance

Date and Time of Chandra Grahan 2018 or Lunar Eclipse 2018: The whole world was waiting for the time of a lunar eclipse occurring only once in a century. And tonight we shall witness the longest lunar eclipse as of July 27 (night) and early hours of July 28 with a total duration of one hour and 43 minutes. The lunar eclipse or ‘Chandra Grahan’ as it is called in Indian local languages especially in Hindi, will be visible in India tonight. The day is also considered as ‘Blood Moon’, where the earth’s satellite take the color of a reddish hue. A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly behind the earth and the moon is eclipsed by the shadow of the earth. During the total lunar eclipse, the earth blocks direct sunlight from reaching the moon. The only available light that gets reflected from the surface is refracted by the atmosphere present around the earth. The resultant refracted light tends to appear reddish, for which it is called as Blood Moon. The Lunar Eclipse occurring on July 27, 2018, will happen on a full moon night. The first phase of the lunar eclipse will be such that the moon will come under the earth’s shadow. This part of it is known as the penumbral eclipse (initial stage). As per the timing values provided by authorities, it will begin from 11:44 pm IST on July 27. The first phase of the eclipse of the moon is set to 11:54 pm. The lunar eclipse is estimated to be set from 1:00 am IST on July 28. According to the information, the total lunar eclipse or Chandra Grahn effects can be seen in cities like Delhi, Pune, Bengaluru, and Mumbai among others.

In the second phase, the moon will continue in its orbit and therefore it will be another partial lunar eclipse, which can be easily seen from around 2:43 am IST.


As per the reports, the earth’s satellite will be completely in alignment with the sun and the earth. The eclipse can be seen all across the globe excluding North America. It can be easily viewed from Australia, New Zealand, Africa and Asia.

As on January 31st, the world saw its lunar eclipse of the year, where the moon was seen red in color and much bigger in size. However, it was easily visible only in a few countries. It was, in fact, the first time in 152 years that a supermoon, a blue moon, and a blood moon coincided.

It is a common myth in our country that the cycles of the moon have an impact on the body systems of humans; both physical and psychologically. Moreover, there are different beliefs and practices relating to the lunar eclipse across the country. These beliefs have grown superstitions, some of which are still observed to date. But, according to science or scientific studies, there is no support available. The next lunar eclipse will be on December 31, 2028.
