Congress May Be Headed By Someone Outside Family In Future: Sonia Gandhi

United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi said on Friday that there may be a Congress President outside the Nehru-Gandhi family in the future, she added to the fact that Manmohan Singh, a person not belonging to Nehru-Gandhi family as the Prime Minister in 2004 as he was a better candidate for the post than her.

Mrs. Gandhi said there is a good chance if there is a better candidate, when asked the question for if there is a chance for a person outside the Nehru-Gandhi family to hold the responsibility of the party president. Sonia Gandhi said this in an interview with India Today.

When asked if the Congress party can survive without Gandhi as its leader, she responded saying that it should be put to the Congress workers.

Mrs. Gandhi said the leaders in the Congress party are elected democratically and this has been the tradition in the party. While answering this, she referred to the dynasties in the United States like the Bush family and the Clintons and also to the dynasties in many states of India.

“There are many Congressmen, you can ask them,” said Sonia Gandhi when asked if she is the only glue for the party.

Taking the perception off in a few quarters that are under the UPA government when Manmohan Singh was the Prime Minister and Mrs. Sonia Gandhi was in power, she said, “I don’t think it was that kind of a situation.”

When asked why she did not become the Prime Minister, she said, “Because I thought Dr. Manmohan Singh would be a better Prime Minister than myself.”

“Without trying, even I knew my limitation,” she said answering a question.

Sonia Gandhi said she decided to take the political plunge when she saw the party was going through a very difficult time.
