India’s police force is often slammed for several reasons with corruption, incompetence, and brutality against people being common. There are some guys who actually misuse their powers and land common people in trouble.

But now it seems as if the Indian police will always be on their toes and finish their duties on time because, in the near future, the concerned cop will have to pay a fine of Rs. 5,000 or Rs. 250 daily if he/she doesn’t complete the duty within the stipulated time.

Yes, if police are unable to complete your passport verification in 20 days, cannot provide a copy of a FIR on the same day a complaint is lodged and then the cop could end up paying a penalty of Rs 5,000 or a Rs 250 daily fine.

As per reports, the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) has recommended penalties on 45 services which they have categorized as ‘Public Delivery Services’. These services include passport verification in 20 days, verification of tenants and foreigners, licence issuance, issuing NOC for protest, music programs, post-mortems, etc. other than investigation of cases and arrests which come under regular work of police.

The topmost research body says that a fine of Rs. 5,000 should be imposed on the concerned police officer if the work is not completed within the reasonable time or a daily fine of Rs. 250 will be imposed if work is delayed beyond the fixed time. However, this seems to be a little tough and harsh for the police as we have one policeman for every 729 Indian citizens.

PM Modi has asked for those uniform public services which are related to police and then BPR&D was asked to categories those services in which citizens and police have regular interaction. As per BPR&D, these public delivery services should be included in the ‘Citizens’ Charter’ of all the states and Union territories to provide citizens with better service which will, in return, improve the reputation of police as well.

The BPR&D’s report has been shared with the ministry of home affairs and the states as well and it also suggests for setting time frames for all the services.

For verification of passport, BPR&D has suggested 20 days, the same for issuing NOC for arms licence, 3 days for the impounded vehicle’s release, 15 days for tenant, employee and servant verification and 7 days for registering the foreigners who are visiting the country.

BPR&D has stated that if cops don’t finish their work within the stipulated time, citizens can make an appeal before the appellate authority and revisional authority, which will be constituted of senior officials such as IG or additional DGP.
