Death penalty for drug smuggling says Punjab govt
Recently a cabinet meeting was held in Punjab in which Punjab government recommended that if people are involved in drug smuggling cases and are found guilty will be punished with the death penalty on Monday, the recommendation was being forwarded to the Centre said, Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh.
Besides this, a commitment has been given by the Congress ahead of the Assembly election last year that was Making Punjab free from drugs.
“Since drug peddling is destroying entire generations, it deserves exemplary punishment. I stand by my commitment for drug-free Punjab,” Singh said.
As the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act already has allocated the death penalty for repeat drug culprit, so this recommendation worth nothing,
As the CM of Punjab Capt Amarinder Singh committed on his twitter account that ”My govt has decided to recommend the death penalty for drug peddling/smuggling. The recommendation is being forwarded to the Union government. Since drug peddling is destroying entire generations, it deserves exemplary punishment. I stand by my commitment for a drug-free Punjab”.
As per the source, this decision of death penalty for drug smuggling has taken by the Punjab Government after increasing public pressure over the drug risk in Punjab. However, several NGOs and prominent personalities of the state had called to observe the first week of July as ‘Black Week’ because the state government was not taking any action against the Drugs smuggling, it was decided to stage protests across the state to wake up the government. Though, there was started a political protest movement ‘Chittey De Virodh Vich Kaala Hafta’, with the tagline, Maro Jaan Virodh Karo (either die or speak against drugs) after a spate of drug-related deaths which were reported from across the state in June.
