Muslims mark the day to commemorate the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (A.S. – Also known as Abraham) to sacrifice his only and single son on the order of God to show his obedience and devotion towards God. Muslims around the globe celebrate the second in the rank festival by sacrificing a male goat to show their own devotion to God and as a symbol of the great test Prophet, Ibrahim went through. This year, the festival falls in the month of August or September according to the Gregorian calendar, but as Muslims follow Islamic lunar calendar, then the date for the festival comes during the month of twelfth or the final month of Dhul al-Hijjah. So the date is fixed in the lunar calendar with 10th day of the lunar month Dhul al-Hijjah being celebrated for the festival.

  • Eid al-Adha 2018 Significance (Bakrid 2018)

Eid al-Adha is regarded as one of the most significant festivals by Muslims around the globe due to the great sacrifice test went through by Prophet Ibrahim or Abraham (He is regarded as the father of Abrahamic religions). As per the narrations, the Prophet was ordered by God to prove the truth-ness of his faith in Him and for that, Prophet was to sacrifice the dearest thing in the world. The dearest thing, of course, was his only son, Prophet Ismail. The steadfast faith in God lead Prophet Ibrahim to offer his 13-year old son, Ismail for sacrifice. God was moved by his Prophet’s willingness to sacrifice his only son to prove his devotion to Him and then, immediately God intervened by sending his top angel Jibril or Gabriel to replace his son, Ismail with a goat. So to mark this event, Muslims around the globe celebrate the day as Eid al-Adha by sacrificing male goats which are then divided into three equal portions. Each portion is given away in parts to different kind of people. One part from that is given away to the poor people and the needy ones, the other one is distributed into the relatives and friends and the last and third part is retained by the family members to use it as food.
