Election Commission To Decide Date Of Elections In Telangana Today
New Delhi: Election Commission will soon decide with regard to holding early elections in the state of Telangana as it is slated to meet today as yesterday Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao declared that the state assembly would be dissolved to have an easier election eight months before schedule.
The Election Commission will see into the matter of Telangana elections to form a new assembly by December with other three states which are scheduled to hold this year – Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh.
The top election body holds meetings on Tuesday and Friday every week to discuss any issue and most likely Telangana issue will be taken up in today’s meeting, a senior official said.
“Issues like festivals, examinations and weather conditions will be discussed before arriving at a final conclusion,” the official said hoping that the Telangana polls will be held at the end of this year.
The actual time for the ending of Telangana assembly was original till June 2019 but the chief of the ruling party of Telangana state, TRS Chief Minister Rao or KCR as he is popularly known as per the reports wants to avoid any kind of collision with the national elections due to be held next year.
The reason cited by the Chief Minister for the early dissolving the assembly as political fragility in the state, sources close to him say that he wants to focus on his role and his government’s achievements instead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the state polls.
Yesterday, a cabinet meeting was called by KCR before he announced his widely-anticipated decision to dissolve the assembly and a call to hold early elections. As per the reports, he had already consulted the Election Commission.
A period of total six months is allowed for elections to be held after the assembly is dissolved. The BJP is of the view that KCR believes that he has got a better chance to win before the state gets caught up in the general elections campaign.
Earlier there has been an announcement from some parties to support a Non-BJP and Non-Congress front. The first one to voice was KCR himself and then followed the announcement by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu of Andhra Pradesh. Even West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee extended support for the idea. The DMK party chief of Tamil Nadu Mr. Stalin too supported the idea by saying that we need to rout out BJP from the center. It can only be said only after the elections in Telangana, whether what political course the country takes on the national level.
