Electric SUV To Be Mahindra’s Flagship Product In The First Half Of FY 2019-20

Mahindra and Mahindra is all set to launch its first electric SUV in India in the coming next fiscal year. The Managing Director of M&M talked about the new e-SUV’s arrival in the market during the name announcement of the company’s new MPV Mahindra Marazzo. The car’s earlier name was codenamed as U321. Goenka said that the new electric SUV will soon be launched during the 2019-2020 financial year and while he did not give us the name of the e-SUV, we believe it will be based on the KUV100.

We can guess this because, earlier during the launch of the Mahindra KUV100 facelift, Pawan Goenka had already mentioned that planning is underway by Mahindra to introduce electric versions for all future crossover and SUV models and the KUV100 EV will be the first such to come in the electric version. As per our earlier information, the company was planning to introduce two new vehicles based on electric versions by 2019. And one of them may be Mahindra KUV100 electric vehicle. At that time, when Rajan Wadhera, President, Automotive Sector, M&M, was asked regarding the upcoming Mahindra KUV100 to be on the same powertrain as the one used in Mahindra e2o Plus, he said, “the electric KUV100 will get an all-new electric powertrain.”

The EV arm of Mahindra and Mahindra, Mahindra Electric, sells two types of electric vehicles in India – the e20 Plus hatchback and the e-Verito electric sedan. The company also offers the e-Supro in the light commercial vehicle segment. As of now, these are the only all-electric models from Mahindra which have been put on sale in India. And by next year, by every possible means, we’ll see the addition of an electric SUV as well.

The company had earlier talked about the possibility of an electric XUV Aero Coupe, which is based on the Mahindra XUV Aero Coupe Concept, showcased at the Auto Expo 2016. As of now the company, currently, working on a long-range electric motor which could provide up to 350 km on a full charge, which could be the one used by the XUV Aero Coupe EV.

Electric cars will be the future of travel means. Many countries have pledged to make fossil fuel cars a thing of past and have set a timeline to put an end to it and will introduce electricity based cars soon within a decade or so.
