Employees Of Google Criticize Censorship Of China On Search Engine

Several hundreds of employees from the search engine giant have complained while lodging their written to the company against the proposed launch of “censored search engine” in China.

They wrote in the protest letter that the proposed project has raised “urgent moral and ethical questions” and sought the firm to be more transparent instead of censoring.

“Currently we do not have the information required to make ethically-informed decisions about our work,” they added.

Google declined to comment over the issue as the company never disclosed in public about the plans.

The search tech giant, owned by the parent company of Alphabet, choose to quit China eight years ago itself to protest the censorship laws and alleged government hacks being meted out at the company.

But according to the reports last month, the company is working in a secret way on a new search service for China known as “Dragonfly” internally.

The platform is still in the waiting for the green signal from the Chinese government and if approved, it would block certain websites and search terms like human rights and religion.

The moves saw a hurdle from some of the employees of the company who are of the view that free expression will further suppressed in China.

The letter which was shared with different media organizations, had the content in which there was an argument that these censors will violate the “don’t be evil” clause in the code of conduct of Google.

“We urgently need more transparency, a seat at the table, and a commitment to clear and open processes: Google employees need to know what we’re building,” the letter said.

This one is not a sole example of Google employees have spoken against the decisions of the company.

For instance, in April, several thousands of the employees openly criticized its ongoing US military programme developing artificial intelligence for drones.

After the severe criticism, Google ended the Artificial Intelligence contract with the Pentagon.

As of now, the world’s largest internet audience is found in China, but US tech firms have not been able to do their business in the country due to the censorship involving content restrictions and blockages.

Major worldwide spread social media companies like Facebook, Instagram, Google and Twitter are all completely banned despite the fact that the company, Google, still has its offices in the country.
