Father And Son Killed After Boat Flipped While Trying To Save A Tourist From Singapore In Victoria

On Easter Sunday, 32-year-old Andy Powell and his father, 71-year-old Ross Powell, passed away when the boat that they used to save a Singaporean tourist in Victoria flipped.

Ross, Andy, and a lifeguard used a boat to save a tourist that was struggling to come out in the Port Campbell, which is located near the 12 apostles.

Right after they rescued the tourist who hails from Singapore, the boat that they were using flipped, which threw them back to the rough sea.

The 30-year-old Singaporean tourist and the lifeguard were rescued, officials said the tourist attained serious injuries, but Andy and his father did not survive.

Amber Griffiths, the pregnant girlfriend of Andy, wrote a message for her partner, she said, “We lost two of the most beautiful people to ever exist – always putting others first. The love of my life, the light of my life, father of my baby girl. My heart is broken. I miss you.”

The rescued men were brought to the Alfred Hospital, they attained injuries in their back and legs. Officials say that they are currently in a stable condition.

The Mayor of Corangamite, Neil Trotter said, “They were both volunteers for everything that was going – CFA, SES, surf lifesaving. Ross was an inaugural member of the lifesaving club when it was formed in 1965 and maintained it his whole life. I think that speaks volumes – he put his community first.”

Mayor Neil added that the king tides along with a big swell meant that the area during that time was home to disastrous moments.

Paul James, the president of Lifesaving Vitoria said that their close-knit community is devastated when they got to know about the incident.

President James said, “The two men [who died] were both highly experienced and long-serving members. They were called to assist a patient in the water, they ventured out as a group of three rescuers in a six-meter rigid hull inflatable boat. For whatever reason, that boat got into difficulty.”

He added, “It’s just terrible, it’s heartbreaking. The boat was operating in two-meter swell … we know it’s treacherous down there. These brave people, these heroes, have gone out to try and help.”
