Five Month Goats Are Ripped Off Brutally by Villagers in Nepal With Bare Hands

People across the globe celebrate festivals following many brutal, inhumane practices to please their deities. Recently China’s Yulin festival had led to a big debate as it involves slaughtering of  dogs. Now it’s the turn of Nepal, whose cultural festival involving ripping off a live goat with bare hands and teeth is triggering off outrage among animal rights campaigners.

Goats Hurled into Pond to Rip Violently with Bare Hands and Teeth

Villagers of Khokana village in Nepal celebrate Deopokhari festival complying a tradition of ripping apart baby goats by their teeth and bare hands until they die. What makes this festival hit the headlines now is the celebration earlier month. Millions attend the ceremony which is held in honor of the Hindu goddess of power, Gadhimai, at her temple in Bariyarpur, near the Indian border.

Nepal’s people have been celebrating Deopokhari festival for more than 900 years now and  it is usually observed during the month of August near the sacred Deo pond. Villagers of the Khokana claim that they have been following this tradition as part of the culture of the Newari people who were believed to be the indigenous people of the area around the Kathmandu Valley.

Villagers hurl  five or six-month-old goat into the Deu pond later a group of nine young men jump into the pond who commence the celebrations tearing and rending goat with hands and teeth. People who have been associated with NGOs’ and animal rescuing organizations such as PETA are condemning this barbaric act of villagers killing goats.

However, animal lovers and their rights campaigners are advocating and condemning the brutal killing of the impeccant living creatures. Outraged people across the globe moved on to the social networking and online communities filing petitions to call off the brutal killing of animals on the pretext of spiritual and religious sacrifices.

Although many people through the online medium are opposing while the villagers have been celebrating the festival yet without paying attention to the statements of the NGO’s and association. Social media forums and networks briefed there is no justification or excuse for such practices in this day and age, and any civilized society should not tolerate this.
