IDC Predicts Android Phones To Reach 85 Percent Global Market Share In 2018

By the end of 2018, the global market will see Android mobile phones will take at least 85% of the share due to the volumes expected to grow at a rate of five-year Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 2.4 percent and the shipments are expected to approach a whopping 1.41 billion in 2022, an IDC report said this week.

In 2018, Apple is expected to grow by 2.1 percent and its phone market kingmaker iPhone is expected to grow at a five-year CAGR of two percent and as a result, will reach volumes of 238.5 million by the year 2022, said the market research firm IDC.

As per the IDC’s “Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker 2018”, a recent interesting trend happening with Android shipment is that the average selling prices (ASPs) are growing at a double-digit pace.

IDC expects Android ASPs to grow at least 11.4 percent in 2018 to USD 262 (roughly Rs. 18,600), which is a trend up from USD 235 (roughly Rs. 16,700) in 2017. The upward trajectory for the trend will continue through the forecast, but at a more tempered low single-digit rate from 2019 and beyond.

“With two out of three new iPhones expected to be larger than six inches, Apple will not be left behind in the 2018 race for increased screen real estate,” said Melissa Chau, Associate Research Director, IDC Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Device Trackers.

“You could say the term ‘phablet’ is becoming less relevant now that most smartphones will ship with larger screens, and when folding screens start coming into play in the medium term, this screen trend will evolve in new directions,” Chau added.

Anyhow, the global smartphone market will be on a decline in 2018 again as per the expectation and the market would go through low single-digit growth from the year 2019 all the way till the end of 2022.

As per the expectations of IDC, smartphone shipments may decline 0.7 percent in 2018 to 1.455 billion units, down from 1.465 billion in the year 2017.

People are turning towards smartphones to make their life easier due to the resourcefulness of the set with the help of internet connection. There are a host of options available in a smartphone compared to an ordinary phone. In India too, due to the launch of Jio internet services, there is a revolution in the digital atmosphere. India is all slated to become a digital country in a matter of years. For this the government has initiated many programmes.
