Imran Khan Seeks Resumption Of Peace Talks Between India-Pak By Writing A Letter To PM Modi

The newly elected Prime Minister of Pakistan has sent a written letter to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressing on the need for both the nations to re-start the peace dialogue that was suspended since the year 2015. The letter started by addressing the Prime Minister of India as “Modi Sahab”. In the letter the Pakistan PM also wants a meeting to be held between the foreign minister of both the countries.

Regarding terrorism, the Pakistan Prime Minister wrote that the country remains ready to discuss the issue.

The Pakistani Prime Minister endorsed the Indian Prime Minister’s sentiment in the letter the latter wrote to him after he attained the post after the swearing ceremony. He said that he believed that the only way to prosperity for the two nations is to engage constructively. During his victory speech, the cricketer turned politician had said that his country of Pakistan would respond by taking two steps if India takes one.

But according to the government sources, there might not be any steps to resume the dialogue process anytime soon. “Talks and terror can’t go together,” they say, while he reiterated New Delhi’s stand. But there is a high possibility of a meeting being held between the foreign ministers of the two countries on the sidelines of the United Nations.

This attempt is the second outreach by Imran Khan, a politician seen to be very close to the Pakistan army and the campaigns for the elections were full of rhetoric against India.

The date of the letter written is September 14, but the details were only known after the news of a soldier’s throat being cut by Pakistani troops at the International Border and after this, the Border Security Force took a strong note of the incidence and protested with the Pakistan Rangers.

“Pakistan and India have an undeniably challenging relationship. We, however, owe it to our peoples, especially the future generations, to peacefully resolve all outstanding issues, including the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, to bridge differences and achieve a mutually beneficial outcome,” said Mr Khan.

He further said in the letter that Siachen and Sir Creek also need close attention to bring forward a resolution.

“Building on the mutual desire for peace between our two countries, I wish to propose a meeting between Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, before the informal meeting of the SAARC foreign ministers at the sidelines of the upcoming UN General Assembly in New York,” Imran Khan wrote.

He said that the two nations can aim to move forward, and added that the SAARC summit in Islamabad “will offer an opportunity for you to visit Pakistan and for us to re-start the stalled dialogue process,” Mr. Khan said in the letter to PM Modi.

Both the countries turned there back to the peace process after hostilities escalated between them with reports of a series of attacks. The terror attack on an army camp in Uri left at least 19 soldiers dead. India quenched its thirst for revenge by launching surgical strikes across the line of control to target Pakistani terror camps.
