Irish Woman Raped In Goa, Her Mother Wants To Meet The Rapist
The safety for women is getting lower and lower with each passing day even after enforcing various laws for the same. There is no security even to the foreigners who come to visit our country. Danielle McLaughlin who visited the country for the festival of Holi was raped and murdered and her body was completely mutilated and was thrown on a farm. The local farmer traced her body and informed the same to the police.
Danielle came to India from Ireland in March last year. Indian police took the case as a challenge and figured out that the murderer was the local guide himself. They detained him and he was charged with raping and murder and distorting evidence.
During the trial of Vikram Bhagat who is the local guide, a witness said that the body was mutilated by Vikram so that no one could recognise her. Andrea Brannigan was given a rare chance of attending the trial and also participating in it so that she could get justice for her daughter. Brannigan is travelling to India to attend the trials.
“I am very nervous about the trial and hope justice is swiftly served for Danielle’s sake,” Brannigan, 47, said from Ireland in a telephone interview.
“I am hopeful the verdict will be out soon because the investigation officials have collected evidence and fast-tracked the entire process, which is amazing,” added Andrea.
The case being fought by an Indian Lawyer but Andrea could intervene and confront her daughter’s murderer face to face. She was shocked and devastated by her daughter’s murder but is content that justice is being served and the criminal is getting punished finally.
“I have the right to represent, which is very unusual, but we can ensure the proceedings are (moving) in the right direction,” she said.
This is not the first time such incident happened. In 2008, 15-year old Scarlett Keeling was also found dead in the shallow waters of the beach.
