Jio Takes Revenge By Filing A Case Against Airtel !! The Reason Is Interesting
The intense war between Jio and Airtel just doesn’t seem to end. After Airtel complained to TRAI about Jio’s promotional offer, Jio thought of taking revenge. Recently we have seen Airtel has rolled out too many ads about its “Fastest” speed of its internet and Jio has a problem with the same.
Reliance Jio on Monday lodged a complaint with the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) against broadband tester Ookla’s network speed test that said Bharti Airtel has the fastest network speed.
False And Misleading Advertising:
Reliance Jio on Monday filed a complaint against rival Airtel, alleging that certain recent advertisements run by the latter make false and malicious claims, and have caused harm to the company. With Airtel claiming to be ‘officially the fastest’ network in India, Reliance has taken the case to the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI). Jio has trashed Airtel’s claims, calling them “false, misleading and incorrect”.
According to the company, the methodology adopted to determine Internet speed by Ookla, the web-based network and diagnostic applications, was flawed and Jio has issued a legal notice to Ookla as well.
In the complaint, Jio stated that since Ookla isn’t recognized by Department of Telecommunications or TRAI, the word “Officially” can’t be used.
A spokesperson of Jio said: “We are aware of the material flaw in Ookla Speedtest and have also raised it with them in the past. In spite of acknowledging this flaw, we are surprised that Ookla has gone ahead and released misleading results. We have initiated suitable actions at appropriate forums.”
On the other hand, a spokesperson of Airtel said: “Airtel has been rated as India’s fastest mobile network by Ookla—the global leader in broadband testing and web-based network diagnostic applications. This is clearly mentioned in the ad. Ookla’s findings are based on analysis of millions of internet speed tests logged on ‘modern devices’ by mobile customers across India using its popular Speedtest app. The results include all mobile tests, regardless of connection technology.”
Ookla COO Jamie Steven said in a statement that Speedtest is the “definitive way to measure your internet performance”. “Speedtest has been actively used billions of times, making it the dominant global leader in internet performance testing and metrics,” he added.
Reliance has asked ASCI to inform Airtel to withdraw advertisements with the claims and has also insisted on removing references from Ookla.
In reality, the speed of the internet is determined on the basis of country code and mobile network. For instance, if the handset has 2 SIM slots; the results would be declared in favor of the first slot only. If your mobile has Airtel as SIM 1 and Jio as SIM 2, the results will be in favor of Airtel.
Reliance Jio has asked Ookla to acknowledge that there are “serious and fundamental flaws” in the methodology for determining data speeds. Ookla had recently felicitated Airtel with the fastest mobile carrier award in February based on consumer-initiated Speedtest results in Q3 and Q4 of 2016.
