Kerala Chief Minister Calls For One Month Salary Donation From State’s People

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan urged all Malayalees to help the state recover from the loss due to the worst in nearly a century floods by donating at least one-month salary. The death toll in the state has gone up to 302 and more than four lakhs are still living in relief camps.

Many people have started to move to their homes from the camps after all the cleaning work was completed by the authorities.

After the floods waters started receding, mounds of mud and debris were seen in their homes and surroundings.

The total death toll climbed to a whopping 302 with more dead bodies recovered until now, according to a government press release.

The ongoing relief operations were also reviewed by Pinarayi Vijayan.

Not less than, 4.62 lakh people are still living in 1,435 relief camps. And until now about three lakh houses were cleaned by the authorities.

The humanitarian assistance for the victims of Kerala floods by different people of all kinds of walks of life was hailed by the Prime Minister today and said that without any regard of age or area of work, people came forward to contribute for the cause.

Along with that, he also appreciated the role played by the Navy, Air Force, NDRF, Army, CISF, BSF and the RAF in availing relief and rescue operations.

“Yesterday was the festival of Onam. We pray for Onam to provide strength to the country, especially Kerala so that it returns to normalcy on a newer journey of development. Once again on behalf of all Indians, I would like to reassure each and every one in Kerala and other affected places that at this moment of calamity, the entire country stands by them,” PM Modi said during his monthly ‘Mann ki Baat’ radio address.

He also said that the loss of lives cannot be compensated at any cost, but also assured that the grief-stricken families will see every Indian stand by them shoulder to shoulder in the moment of suffering.

As the state of Kerala struggles to stand on its feet, the issue of water logging inside the home in various places, especially in Kuttanad region from one of the worst hit Alapuzha district continues to become a worrying factor.

According to the authorities, the cleaning process will be taken up by removing the accumulated silt through huge pumps to flush out water from homes and premises.

The union government at the center has already approved and released a sum of Rs. 600 crore to cater for immediate assistance measures against the state’s demand for Rs. 2,000 crore.

Ramesh Chennithala, opposition leader in the assembly, said that more central funds were still needed for Kerala and there was nothing wrong to accept any kind of foreign aid to get the state rebuild.
