Killer of 130 Street Dogs Boldly Admits of Poisoning Them with Laced Meet

Perhaps laws never make any difference for a few in a republican nation like India. A Keralite, MJ Shafi publicly admitted of killing about 130 street dogs brutally by feeding them poison-laced meat. On being questioned about his bold confession he says that he has his neighbors support, hence couldn’t consider killing of dogs as a crime.

Astonishingly he directed the media personnel’s in this regard to the place, where he buried 130 dogs after killing them and then to the public bus stop where he fed those 130 dogs with poison-laced meat. Killer MJ Shafi who is 43-year-old and drives auto rickshaw claimed that this as a cause saying “I don’t mind going to jail for this.”

Triggered by the incidents of street dogs attack, their culling  has become the norm in parts of Kerala. Strangely a few local groups announced cash rewards for killing the stray dogs in different localities which have resulted later pilling up of  dead dogs in Kannur district and in Ernakulum of Kerala.

Stray dog’s menace has been reported as a severe problem in Mr. Shafi’s hometown Muvattupuzha  a few days ago which about 30 km from Ernakulam. A few instances of 30 people including children and elders being bitten by the stray dogs have been reported to the local authorities during the past 6 months while locals claim their plea was ignored.

‘Don’t Want to See Children Being Bitten by Dogs’

Mr. Shafi alleged that “The government and the panchayat have done nothing.” He further added “my colleague had to spend a whopping Rs. 95,000 when his son Joy was bitten by a dog. The five-year-old is a patient of hemophilia, a disease where bleeding, internal or external, does not stop without expensive treatment and a patient is in danger of bleeding to death. I don’t want to see other children being bitten by dogs.”

However, local cops have reported that they are registering a case against Mr. Shafi grounding a complaint lodged by the Animal Welfare Board. Ambili and Rajesh who are just a few kilo meters away from Mr. Shafi’s hometown run a dog shelter while are claiming that “we have helped the local panchayat with animal birth control procedures till 2012 while the municipality has stopped that.”

UR Babu, Municipal Chairman of Muvattupuzha said “Due to the inadequacy of staff and resources sterilizing dogs was not a viable option for local bodies. It is the government’s responsibility.” On contrary government, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had asked civic bodies to take necessary steps to check the dog menace, earlier.
