Lalu To Undergo Specialized Treatment In AIIMS Delhi

New Delhi/Ranchi: Lalu Prasad Yadav, who is jailed for period of time in connection with Fodder Scam will be given specialized treatment by doctors in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi.

Presently he was serving his jail term in Ranchi and he was referred to AIIMS by the Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) in Ranchi.

“His condition is stable. He was brought in at noon. His sugar levels are a little bit high and he has some infection in the kidney,” an AIIMS doctor commented over his health condition.

He also added that Lalu Yadav has been under treatment in the medicine department.

Lalu, aged 69, was complaining of uneasiness while serving sentence at the Bisra Munda Jail. Following the complaint, he was admitted to RIMS in Ranchi district on March 17.

A special CBI court allowed him to get treatment at the AIIMS Delhi, and he left to Delhi by train.

Senior attorney Chittaranjan Sinha, who has been handling Lalu Yadav’s fodder scam cases from the very start, commented over the health of the leader and said that he is suffering from diabetes, high creatinine levels and blood pressure.

“His condition was not suitable for flying and the doctors at RIMS advised him to travel by train,” Mr Sinha said.

A medical board from the RIMS, Ranchi had recommended that he needs to get treatment at AIIMS, said RIMS Director RK Srivastav.

The former chief minister of Bihar was convicted in four fodder scam cases since 2013. The fourth one and the latest is the Dumka treasury case, for which a special CBI court sentenced him to 14 years in jail.

On April 6, the Jharkhand High Court is slated to hear his bail plea in connection with his conviction in the third fodder scam case – relating  to the fraudulent withdrawal of Rs. 37.62 crore from the Chaibasa Treasury, Mr Sinha said.

The fodder scam was huge corruption scandal that involved fraud of about Rupees 9.4 billion from the government treasury in Bihar. Lalu Prasad Yadav was among those implicated for the theft and was arrested along with another accused, the then chief minister Jagannath Mishra. After the scandal surfaced, Lalu’s fiefdom and rule in Bihar came to an end. Later Lalu was convicted by a special CBI court and Mishra was acquitted.

The scam was, at the first level, very small one, but as time passed, it started to spread among some government employees who submitted false expense reports. And at last it became a mafia by drawing additional elements including politicians, business men and a well-organized mafia was fully formed. Jagannath Mishra, who was chief minister of Bihar during the mid-1970s was the first one to get accused for knowing the ones involved in the scam.
