Heavy Rains Slam Mumbai Showering 9 Times Usual Rain, Train Lines Suspended And Chaos On Roads [Pics – Videos]
Mumbai has been experiencing incessant heavy rainfall since Saturday morning, with the Regional Meteorological Centre, Colaba predicting the situation to remain the same for next 24 hours. India’s business capital Mumbai struggled for breath in waist-deep water, lashed by what weathermen believe could be the worst rain since July 2005, when the city was devastated by floods.
It has been raining since few days and the rain is so heavy that people can’t even enjoy or have a good time. The rainfall recorded by the automatic weather stations between August 27 at 8 am and August 28 at 8 am was 102 mm.
Maharashtra government has issued orders to all offices to allow their employees to leave early in the wake of Met department’s warning on heavy rains. Following the incessant rain, Milan and Andheri subways have been shut due to water-logging. Traffic snarls have been reported from Andheri, Wakola, Film City junction, Santacruz and Worli Sea Link.
Vehicles are half dipped in water and people are finding it difficult to walk on roads. When it’s Mumbai and rains, local train services are the first ones to get hampered. As expected, railways are paralyzed and tracks are filled with water.
After a continuous downpour, most of Mumbai was submerged by afternoon. People were advised to avoid beaches and promenades, which will impact the ritual immersion of Ganesha idols, an annual event.
The pouring rain has slowed down the city’s vehicular traffic. South Mumbai witnessed downpour throughout Monday afternoon causing sluggish movement of traffic in the area. On social media, people have taken to tweeting out pictures and videos of the non-stop downpour using #MumbaiRains.

Further enhancement in the rain activity is expected for the next 48-72 hours,” said K.S. Hosalikar, deputy director-general (western region), IMD.
