PM Modi Receives Standing Ovation At The House Of Commons, London And Here’s Why He Visited UK

On Day 2 of his visit to UK, Prime Minister Narendra Modi became the first Indian head to address the British parliament at London’s Wembley stadium. PM Modi started his speech saying he was honoured to speak at the British parliament and was delighted to be in London. “I know that the British parliament is not is session, PM Cameron looks relaxed and relieved,” the Prime Minister said to a round of laughter.

PM Narendra Modi Receives Standing Ovation:

During the course of his address, the PM said he was once asked how Mahatma Gandhi;s statue stood outside the UK parliament. “I replied, British are wise enough to recognize his (Mahatma Gandhi) greatness and Indians are generous enough to share him,” he said.

Apart from addressing British parliamentarians, PM Modi will have one-on-one bilateral discussion with his UK counterpart David Cameron, with whom he would be sitting across for the third time since assuming the office, foreign secretary S Jaishankar said in a media briefing today.

India signs civil nuclear deal with Britain:

His visit carries expectations for agreements and partnerships worth billions of dollars across defence, security, finance and sectors like education, research and health.

Modi announced that India and Britain have signed a civil nuclear agreement, which shows the mutual trust between the two countries. He also thanked Cameron for Britain’s support for India’s permanent membership for UN Security Council.

He concluded his speech to a loud round of applause. The Prime Minister’s visit to Britain will be a mix of bilateral engagements as well as programmes purely relating to Indian diaspora.
