Supermarkets in Thailand and Vietnam have stopped using plastic bags and are now using banana leaves instead, which makes them lead the fight against single-use plastic bags.

A post was made by a Facebook user who showed how a supermarket in Chiangmai, Thailand used banana leaves as a packaging.

After the post went viral, Vietnamese Supermarkets in Saigon, Hanoi, and Ho Chi Minh followed the trend afterward.

A spokesperson from the Lotte Market in Ho Chi Minh City said that they are doing this as a test and are planning to extend the initiative nationwide with the hopes of using banana leaves for meat and vegetables.

Recently, South Korea banned single-use plastic bags and packaging. Taiwan is also trying to do the same and Singapore is running campaigns to stop people from using single-use plastic bags.

But the biggest change was done by China when the country banned super-thin plastic bags in 2008. Since then, the usage of plastic bags in the country has dropped by 66 percent and has kept more than 40 billion plastic bags out of the ocean.
