This Old Man Casually Sat In A Starbucks During A Flood And Became A Internet Star
An elderly man spotted casually sitting in a Starbucks in Hong Kong has become an overnight star after his photo was shared around the world.
With Hong Kong flooding under heavy rain and preparing for a Super Typhoon Haima this week, most residents are just trying to keep dry. But one heroic man isn’t bothered. He just chilled out in a Starbucks, drinking coffee and reading the paper as water pooled underneath him.
The elderly man, was seen enjoying a coffee and concentrating on his newspaper, was photographed in what appeared to be an abandoned shopping centre in Hong Kong’s Chai Wan district. That’s where the following photo was taken, according to local TV station TV Most.
It was shared on Facebook by media outlet TV Most with the caption: “Huh? The newspaper said that it would be raining today! But I forgot to bring my umbrella.”
The photo racked up more than 20,000 shares within 24 hours of being posted, with the ‘Starbucks Uncle’ also being photoshopped into even more ridiculous scenarios.
Social media has nicknamed the defiant old man as “Starbucks Uncle,” and deemed him a total badass. It didn’t take long before people began photoshopping pics of him hanging out in more dire situations.

The picture has also sparked a viral meme online. One user put the elderly man under a huge wave while others added different people into the picture around the newspaper reader.
Someone shared this photo of the Starbucks staff awkwardly waiting for the old guy to finish up. It’s perfect.
Although some say he’s not as brave as the Taiwanese woman who went viral for eating a pork bun in a typhoon last month.
Starbucks Uncle was even joined later in his protest against the encroaching flood water by a young man with headphones.

Kristy Chan, a 23-year-old medical worker who captured the photo, told the BBC she is surprised by the online reaction to her image.
Chan told the BBC that she was taking photos to show her family how bad the flooding was. Then she came across the man who was seated near the entrance of the shopping center.
“Of course I didn’t expect it would go viral,” Chan said. She also said that Starbucks Uncle wasn’t alone in the shopping center. There were apparently many people seated inside the cafe, as well
