Those Who Do Not Find Their Names In Assam Citizen’s List Can File Claims From September 25: Supreme Court

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today said that those people whose names are not available on the list of the Assam citizen’s list can file claims from the date of September 25. The period for the filing has been extended from previous 30 to now 60 days.

The National Register of Citizens or NRC was found to be missing some 40 lakh people names.

The apex court said that it does not want to allow a second chance to people who change their claims of family tree or change of ancestry.

The top court further said that those who are rightful in their claim and do not find their names in the NRC list can find help regarding that to include themselves. The next hearing in this regard is on September 23.

The government in the Assam will require the extra time to spread awareness effectively regarding how the people can file a fresh claim and what kind of documents are needed for them in this regard. In many such cases, replies have to come from other states and this process can take time.

More than 2.89 crore names are expected to be present in the final draft and there is also suspicion that fake papers might have been submitted to get included into the rolls.

Another big issue that the center is currently facing now is that how to deal with the D voters. Back in 1996, about 1.8 lakh voters had been declared doubtful by the Elections Commission.

“Some of these people have got favorable orders from courts to prove their citizenship and their applications would be processed,” a home ministry officer had told news agencies, and further said that the figure has currently crossed 2 lakh in the last 22-odd years.

After a census, the National Register of Citizens was prepared for the first time. The updated list of NRC in Assam has all those names who are descendants of those names who were in the found in 1951 list or those whose names were in Assam’s Electoral rolls till March 24, 1971.

A total of 1.9 crores out of the 3.29 crore applicants in Assam have got their names cleared in the first round of lists by getting Indian nationality on January 1 this year.

So, whoever does not file their name in the final draft, can claim so by taking appropriate measures and submitting related documents before time to prove their nationality.
