Traffic Constable Dies After Being Attacked At Khar For Seeking Motorcyclist’s Documents

A traffic head constable Shinde (51) who was allegedly attacked by two brothers at a petrol pump in Khar died in the ICU of Lilavati Hospital in Bandra (west) yesterday after 9 days of the attack.

According to the police, Shinde was on duty near the petrol pump, collecting details of motorists near Hotel Rajasthan on SV Road on 23rd August. He stopped the youth aged 16, who was riding a bike without the helmet. Shinde asked the documents of the vehicle.

The youth called his elder brother Ahmed Qureshi (21). The duo argued with the police regarding the documents. Qureshi allegedly used a wooden plank to hit the constable on the back of his head, and the two brothers then escaped from the spot after Shinde collapsed, but they were arrested in 24 hours.

The Senior police inspector Ramchandra Jadhav of Khar police station said that “Although the constable was rushed to the hospital for treatment but remained unconscious and passed away. Initially, both the brothers are charged with attempt to murder but now, they have now been charged with murder and are in custody.

Milind Bharambe, joint commissioner of traffic police said, “We will follow the laid-down procedure to ensure his family gets all benefits given to martyrs.”

After the death, the Mumbai’s Police Commissioner said that “It’s unfortunate as the cop died on duty. I pay my condolences to the family”.  He also tweeted

According to the Times of India report, the constable’s death has also become a political issue with the Shiv Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena targeting the government over Shinde’s death since he was a Maharashtrian and the CM Devendra Fadnavis was heckled by locals when he visited the constable’s family.

Shinde was a resident of a BDD chawl in Worli, originally from Satara, he is survived by a wife and two children.
