India skipper Virat Kohli was on Tuesday accused of ball tampering during the drawn first cricket Test against England at Rajkot by a British daily. British tabloid ‘The Daily Mail’ has produced inconclusive evidence to show that Kohli used to shine the ball with the residue of a sweet in his mouth.

Virat Kohli had a number of things to celebrate about the test match. He had scored the most number of runs in a Test by an Indian captain, he also registered his 14^th Test century and continued his incredible run in 2016. Apart from these achievements he also carried a blame of ball tampering.

In the footage published by IOL, Kohli is seen rubbing his right-hand fingers with an artificial substance inside his mouth – most probably a chewing gum – and then proceeding to shine the ball applying saliva to the ball.

“Footage has emerged of India captain Virat Kohli appearing to shine the ball using residue from a sweet during his country’s draw with England in the first Test,” the report in The Daily Mail read.

“Television cameras caught Kohli, who finished on 49 not out on the final day in Rajkot, putting his right hand towards his mouth. The 28-year-old can be seen rubbing his fingers in his mouth, inside of which is a sweet. He then appears to shine one side of the ball.” it added.

Du Plessis, who was charged with ball tampering during the second Test against Australia in Hobart after the ICC reviewed footage of the match that appeared to show du Plessis applying saliva to the ball.

He was charged for breaching Article 2.2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct after television footage appeared to show him applying an artificial substance to the ball and Kohli’s action in the footage looks very similar.

However, it is highly unlikely that the Indian skipper will face any kind of action as neither the umpire nor the third umpires made any reference to it in the post match report. Therefore, the ICC, under any circumstances, cannot take any sort of action again Kohli.
