Why Do We Celebrate Engineer’s Day On September 15th? Here Is Everything You Need To Know
The Engineering Community across India is celebrating Engineers Day on 15 September every year as a remarkable tribute to the greatest Indian Engineer Bharat Ratna Visvesvaraya. He is held in high regard as a pre-eminent engineer of India. “Engineering Challenges for Knowledge Era” is the theme of Engineers Day.
It is to honour Sir MV’s achievements and contribution towards the country India celebrates Engineer’s Day on his birthday, 15 September (1861-1962). Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, known as Sir MV had demonstrated his flair towards engineering & nation building.
Achievements of Sir MV:
Sir Mokshagundam Vishweshwaraiah was a noted Indian Engineer of all times. He was also honoured with India’s highest honour Bharat Ratna in 1955. He served as a chief engineer during construction of Krishna Raja Sagara on the Kaveri River near Mysore.
He was not only praised by the Indian government but also received honorary awards and memberships from all over the world. Happy Engineer’s Day to all the engineers out there helping and rebuilding our nation. He died on April 14, 1962.
Unknown Facts About Father Of Engineering:
- After topping the Poona College of Engineering he was recruited directly without any interview by Government of Bombay and appointed as Assistant Engineer in Public Works Department.
- He also worked in different parts of India. In Hyderabad, he improved the drainage system. He also had a good track record in Bombay, Bihar and Orissa projects.
- He supervised the construction of KRS dam, the then Asia’s biggest dam.
- He is the one who created automatic sluice gates but refused to take Royalty (Recurring Income for Patent Rights) from patent so that the government could use this money for more developmental projects.
- Maharaja of Mysore, Sri Krishnaraja Wodeyar, personally met Sir MV and convinced him to lend his service to Mysore State.
- Mahatma Gandhi and Nehru never missed an opportunity to praise the administration of Mysore in general & engineering feats of Sir MV in particular.
- He was offered Dewanship (Prime Minister position) of Mysore in 1908 and given full responsibility for all the development projects.
Sir MV had dedicated his life towards nation building and he epitomized all the qualities of an ideal engineer throughout this life. Hence Indian government decided to honor him by celebrating his birthday as Engineers’ Day.
