Xiaomi Migrating Indian User Data To Local Cloud Providers After Govt Directive
Xiaomi of China had announced that it has started the process of migrating the data of Indian users to cloud service providers that have got the infrastructure in the country. The company said that two such services are being utilized to transfer the data namely, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure.
“At Xiaomi, data privacy and security are of utmost importance to us. We are taking one more step towards user data security and privacy by bringing our Cloud services to India for all local data needs,” Manu Jain, Vice President, Xiaomi and Managing Director, Xiaomi India, said in a statement.
By the end of the year, the company says, all the existing data would be migrated.
The user’s from India who started since July 1 will have their data stored in local servers and the old customer’s existing data on mi.com/in/ would be migrated to servers located in the country by mid-September 2018, Xiaomi said.
Earlier to that, all the data of Indian user’s across Xiaomi’s platforms were kept in AWS servers located in Singapore and the United States.
“I am glad we have been able to turn this around for our India users. With the data stored locally and encrypted end to end, users will be able to enjoy greater access speeds,” Jain added.
The data migration would cover data of all Indian users stored on Xiaomi’s e-commerce platform (Mi.com), Mi Community (in.c.mi.com), Mi Cloud, MIUI (Xiaomi Market, feed, advertising, Mi Messaging, Mi Video, push notifications and others) and Mi TV.
After a government directive with regard to 21 smartphone manufacturers with many of them being from China, to specifically provide procedures adopted by them to ensure the privacy of their user’s data.
Smartphone companies do not store data on servers of their own but instead get leased out spaces on third-party Cloud service providers like that of Google, Microsoft and AWS.
There have many concerns over the privacy of data stored in foreign servers of other countries. And many such cases of private data being used for commercial purpose has come up many times. Over this issue, the government took crucial steps to direct the companies in the country to store data of their customer’s data from the country to store in India only.
The main concern today to be addressed is, to protect private data. Despite technological advancements, there is no concrete solution in this regard.
