Google CEO Sundar Pichai Announces Free Wi-Fi In 100 Railway Stations And A New Campus In Hyderabad

Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who is in India announced free Wi-Fi service in 100 railway stations across the country as he promised to PM Narendra Modi on his visit to Silicon Valley earlier this year. The CEO outlined few new plans by the Company for India like building a huge campus in Hyderabad. Sundar Pichai attended an event which Google India organized in New Delhi. This was one of the largest event for Google anywhere in the world.

Sundar Pichai, who was accompanied by other top executives of the company, announced plans to launch a “huge new” campus in Hyderabad and to recruit more people and Wi-Fi in railway stations. He also said that Mumbai Central Railway station will be the first one of 100 stations to get Wi-Fi connectivity by December 2016. This is part of the US-based firm’s focus on bringing the internet to everyone in India.

This statement is a part of the main focus on making Internet accessible for the next generation of users. Google CEO said the company wanted to connect Indians in their own languages and Android the most popular mobile operating system in India was already supporting up to 11 local languages.

Some of the key initiatives from the event are “Helping women from 3,00,000 villages across India to get online as ‘Internet Saathi’, Google’s “Indic” keyboard which will help the user to type in 11 different languages, Google’s Delhi offline app to give real-time information about transportation in the city.”  Sundar Pichai said, “YouTube and Google Maps were already available offline in the country while the “search team in India has made pages lighter and they now load faster”.

Google new campus in Hyderabad

Rajan Anandan, Vice President of Google in India and Southeast Asia, said by 2018, more than 500 million users will be online in India from 29 states speaking over 23 languages. “But in 2020, over 30 per cent of mobile internet will still be from 2G connections. Google has been on a long journey in India to build products that connect more people, regardless of cost, connectivity, language, gender, or location,” Anandan said.

Our focus on bringing internet access to everyone, making sure our products are working for them in a meaningful way and then ensure our platform allows them to add their voice to the internet,” the India-born CEO said. During his two-day visit, Pichai will meet President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He will also address students at a Delhi University college.
