Hyderabad Faces Major Water Crisis After 30 Years
Hyderabad is facing severe water problem. This is for the first time in 30 yrs that Hyderabad is facing water crisis with all the four reservoirs supplying water to the city. Even though four reservoirs are supplying water Hyderabad water problem is not cleared. The water level in two reservoirs is slowly falling down as the days are passing.
The four reservoirs from which water supply to the city are Himayat Sagar, Osman Sagar, Sigur and Manjira reservoirs. However, all the four reached the dead stage and longer have water for supply. Now the city is getting water supply from the Krishna and Godavari rivers. This is happening as the hard work that has been taken up past 10 to 15 years back. Pipelines were laid for 170 to 200 km for water supply.
Dana Kishore managing director, Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) is so confident that current supply can be well maintained till June 15th. If there is no inflow into reservoirs by the time then the situation may be little difficult.
KT Rama Rao the Telangana`s Minister for municipal administration told that there is a gap of 47 percent with the supply of water in Hyderabad and demand for water. About 660 million gallons a day is required by the city but only half amount is amount is only available to supply on a daily basis. In an emergency, the board is supplying motors to pump water from these two reservoirs where it tends to muddy water with the motor pumps.
Residents from the city outskirts or slum areas where the piped water cannot reach them are being supplied with tankers. Also, they are able to send these are tankers one in four to five days.
