Hockey Legend Major Dhyan Chand To Be Honoured with ‘Pride of India’ In British Parliament
India’s most cherished sportsmen in the history Major Dhyanchand who had been passed away in 1979 made India to feel with pride and esteem many a times through his wizardry hockey playing strategy. Major Dhyanchand has led the Indian national hockey team in Olympics with glorious wins of three golds. In his international career he had scored over 400 goals although these statistics count for nothing when one considers his influence on the game that he picked up only after joining the Army at 16.
Son of the legendary hockey player Dhyan Chand, former Indian hockey player Ashok Kumar would be receiving the award on his behalf. Ashok Kumar responded as “It is a proud moment for the entire family. This award is a big thing for us. It translates Dada Dhyan Chand’s popularity beyond India” when he was asked about his initial feelings and impressions after being aware of this honour.
Hitler who watched Major Dhyanchand playing and winning the gold medal in Berlin Olympics (1936) asked him to join the German team but he had denied the offer. Cricket legendary player Bradman said “He scores goals like runs in cricket” after watching Dhyan Chand playing in Adelaide in the year 1935. Government of India which has honored Dhyan Chand with Padma Bhushan in the year 1956 and released a postage stamp on his first death anniversary in 1980, hasn’t credited him as adequately to his achievements later on.
Dhyan Chand was recommended for the Bharat Ratna by 82 MPs, a number of UPA ministers together in November 2011 amending rules sportspersons to be eligible for Bharat Ratna and wrote to the prime minister’s office although it had been postponed since then. Despite new amendment being passed UPA government dithered for two years after union sports ministry recommended twice for Bharat Ratna twice to Major Dhyan Chand since 2012 and declared Sachin Tendulkar as a ‘popular choice’ on the day of his retirement.
However Dhyan Chand’s glory and his achievements has slashed the Indian government for its illegitimate practices over picking awardee’s on the basis unacceptable norms and barrier’s.
