21-year-old Girl Commits Suicide After Morphed Images Uploaded On Facebook
In a tragic incident, six days after morphed and obscene pictures of her were posted on Facebook, a 21-year-old girl in Tamil Nadu has hanged herself to death on Tuesday. A suicide note was also left by her.
The victim, Vinupriya, a B.Sc student began facing harassment on Facebook after she was tagged in a picture which was obscenely morphed. Her father later filed a complaint with the Magudanchavadi police station regarding the violation.
With the police taking no action and the picture still being online, Vinupriya, seeing no hope, hanged herself to death in her house when she was alone. “A suicide note was found in her room, in which she stated she could not deal with the predicament, more so after her parents suspected she had something to do with the photos uploaded on Facebook,” said Sankari DSP Kandasamy. The letter says “What’s the use of living when my father and mother do not trust me?”
The victim’s parents claim that the police did not take any steps despite several complaints to nab the culprit and remove their daughter’s pictures, nor did they begin procedure on blocking or removing the morphed photo.
Addressing media persons, the victim’s father said his daughter would not have committed suicide if the police had acted immediately upon his complaint.
“We’ve filed a case of abetting suicide and have blocked the Facebook page which carried her pictures,” said Amit Kumar, a senior police officer handling the case. He added that Facebook has been asked to share details of the person who posted the obscene photos.
