Achal Kumar Jyoti Appointed as Election Commissioner
Former Gujarat Chief Secretary Achal Kumar Jyoti was appointed as the Election Commissioner on Thursday, filling one of the two vacancies in the three-member body. Mr. Jyoti 62 year old retired from active service in January 2013 after serving in various capacities in Gujarat. He was also posted at the Kandla Port Trust between 1999 and 2004. Jyoti will have tenure of nearly three years, when he will turn 65, the age at which Election Commissioner demits office under the Constitution.
An Election Commissioner or a CEC has tenure of six years in office or till he or she attains the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier. His tenure as Election Commissioner will commence from the day he assumes charge, a Law Ministry notification said.
Jyoti born on January 23rd, 1953. After V S Sampath demitted office in January, H S Brahma was elevated as CEC in April and Nasim Zaidi got elevated to the top post. But after Brahma demitted office, two posts of Election Commission in the three-member body have remained vacant. Nasim Zaidi took over as the CEC till today and he was the only member in the poll body. The government has further stated that in upcoming days it will soon appoint one more Election Commissioner to fill up the last vacancy. He has also worked as Secretary in the Industry, Revenue and Water Supply Departments.
