The treaty granted complete independence from Britain; although Afghanistan was never a part of the British Empire. The First Anglo-Afghan War was developed between 1839 and 1842 which led to the defeat of the entire British-led Indian invaders by Afghan forces under Akbar Khan. After this defeat, the British-led forces returned to Afghanistan on a special mission to rescue their prisoners of war (POWs) but quickly made a complete withdrawal. The Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878–80) first led to the British defeat followed by their victory at the Battle of Kandahar, which led to Abdur Rahman Khan becoming the new emir and the start of friendly British-Afghan relations. The British were given control of Afghanistan’s foreign affairs in exchange for protection against the Russians and Persians. The country only got rid of the British protectorate in 1919, after a third war Anglo-Afghan, which this time lasted four months.

The present day Afghanistan National Flag consists of three colors as black, red and green with a ratio of 2:3. Since the ancient times, different ensigns were developed and put on use from time to time. In the center of the flag, theirs is the picture of a mosque with its ‘mihrab’ imprinted on it. This flag was finally adopted on 4th January 2004.

The background of the national symbols of Afghanistan has a rich heritage to bank upon. The symbol of coat of arms of Afghanistan has an Arabic inscription at the top of the ‘shahadah’ which is basically a declaration of a religious belief indicating oneness with God and Prophet Muhammad. There is also the image of a mosque with a picture of ‘mehrab’ facing towards Mecca and also has two flags of Afghanistan on both sides of it. The image of the mosque is surrounded in a circular manner with a garland and on the top of it is an Arabic scripture.

Afghan is much more than a geographical fact. It is a political and moral fact – the first community in which men set out in principle to institutionalize freedom, responsible government, and human equality.

Enjoy the blessings of freedom and independence, but also do your  part and work hard to appreciate it.

Take time on this special day to understand what independence means to you.

If our country is worth dying for in time of war let us resolve that it is truly worth living for in time of peace.

Don’t take your freedom and independence for granted, someone had to work hard and make many sacrifices for it.

The winds that blow through the wide sky in these mounts, the winds that sweep from Canada to Mexico, from the Pacific to the Atlantic – have always blown on free men.

If you truly appreciate your freedom, then you will never deny the opportunity to provide freedom to someone else.
